Tips for dealing with the stress of parenting a baby

You’re so tired, stressed, and overwhelmed that you feel like you’ve lost touch with everyone and everything. What are you supposed to do now?

It happens to all of us at one point or another.

  • It seems like your baby never stops crying, and half the time you’re right there with him.
  • You’re surrounded by unfolded laundry, three types of colic remedy (none of which work), and you just realized that the jumbo box of diapers you bought to save money gives your baby a terrible rash.
  • You’ve read all the parenting books, magazines, and websites and you still don’t know what to do.

The truth is, no one is ever ready for parenting.
Everyone’s experience of this parenting gig is different, but here are a few tips that have helped us along the way:

  • Give yourself permission. A new baby can bring out really intense feelings of anxiety, worry, and stress, and all of that is compounded by the fact that you’re trying to adjust to a new life on little sleep. We’ve been there. Take time to do something restorative for yourself. A well-grounded parent is a better parent, so it’s not selfish to take time to reduce your stress and feed your soul.
  • Give yourself time. It’s normal to feel a little overwhelmed or blue sometimes after you bring a new baby home. It’s a major life change, so it takes time to adjust. But if you’re feeling hopeless and sad most of the time, or if those feelings are persistent, please contact your doctor or pediatrician to get help.
  • Give yourself peace of mind. When you’re stressed and overwhelmed it’s hard to be a good parent. Get the peace of mind you need to lean in to your new life as a family by finding tools and solutions that simplify baby care without compromising safety. And remember you’re not alone. Stay plugged in to sanity-saving advice on common new parent situations from people and sources you trust.

Parenting is hard, but it’s also a fantastic adventure. Some moments are more difficult than you ever imagined, but others are so breath-takingly beautiful you can hardly believe it. You’re doing a great job as a parent and it’s so worth it.
